Established Nursery since 1974

Who are Welland Vale Nurseries Ltd?

Forty years ago a local businessman answered an advertisement placed by two young horticulturalists wanting to rent land in the Uppingham area on which to start a nursery.  They had been drawn to Rutland earning a living designing and creating gardens for clients around Leicestershire and Rutland, but their dream had always been to have their own nursery.

This 4 acre green field on the outskirts of Uppingham was to become Welland Vale Nurseries. Having little money they developed the site slowly, initially propagating all their own stock and supplying young plants for other nurseries to grow on together with large numbers of conifers and ground cover plants for landscape projects in new towns.

The businessman in the partnership had no horticultural background. He was an engineer specialising in plastics who conceived and built innovative solutions to make various horticultural processes more efficient.

At this time Garden Centres were just beginning to appear and so Welland Vale diversified into growing ready-to-sell plants for this expanding market.  In the early days all saleable plants just travelled the 20 miles to the Leicester area.  As this market developed, customers demanded a wider range of stock and larger plants. Through sourcing more specialist lines over the years from other growers, long-lasting relationships have been formed all over the UK and Europe. This has enabled Welland Vale Nurseries to become a one-stop plant shop for Garden Centres around Britain.

In the 80s the opportunity arose to purchase another 4 acres adjacent to the site already in use.  Situated on the outskirts of Uppingham between the old A47 and the bypass, few people knew of the nursery’s existence, hidden behind the tall hedges.  Wholesaling has continued with customers as far afield as Cornwall, Kent  and even Scotland.  The ethos of the business has always remained the same – to supply quality plants at reasonable prices, and maintain a high level of integrity and honesty to our customers.

Now that two of the original partners have retired, Welland Vale is moving forward and diversifying again and moving on into a new and exciting  era..

A trade Cash & Carry has been established to supply landscapers with a wide range of quality plants.  They can bring their clients to the site to discuss plans and view our plant range.  This service is now being extended to other trade customers, builders, schools, stately homes to name just a few.  We also offer a hire service for weddings, parties and other functions.

More recently, we have developed a now burgeoning web site selling hedging plants, supplying customers with our quality products all over the uk, watch this space for more developments here!

In 2014, as we celebrate our 40th year in business, we are opening our most ambitious project yet – a retail plant centre. called ‘Garden Inspirations’. We hope it will offer just that; focusing on a wide range of plants and core elements of gardening.  If you’re looking for a garden centre selling everything from clothes to jewellery to furniture, that isn’t what we are about.
